Over the past two seasons we had an Invitation system allowing teams to directly enter the higher divisions of the ESEA League provided they could put together an application showing recent results indicating that they could compete at that level. The system had some genuine success: last season both of our Main winners (at the time the highest non-MDL division) had been invited that season. This season Team One have already taken the first seed after their invite to NA Advanced meanwhile Ence and Fnatic Academy have qualified to the MDL relegation tournament after topping the EU Advanced division following their invite. We want to continue to allow newly created high quality rosters to be able to skip the lower divisions in order to prevent them from wasting their own time stomping lower league teams as well as giving the Open level teams a more positive experience as they start trying to move up the ecosystem. However, we also want to address the community’s genuine concern over how invitations will be distributed for the different divisions.
Therefore we will be moving to a purely objective system where the top teams for specific one day cups will qualify for the spots in the higher divisions. The date and number of slots available from each one day event will be announced weeks in advance.
Important: Teams must use 3 out of the 5 players that they use in their qualifying match (eg the final if 1 team qualifies, the semi final if 2 teams qualify etc) in 3 out of 4 of their first 4 matches. Forfeit wins and losses do not count toward the 4 first matches. Coaches and players who competed in under half of the rounds in the qualifying match will not be eligible to be one of the 3 players.
We feel this is the fairest approach as it gives everyone the same opportunity to show up and prove themselves on that given day.
